Market Research

Methodology | Marketing research

The home fashion wholesale industry is a €200 Billions global market. The majority of all sales activities will happen around the major industry trade shows:

Europe

~€75 Billions

North America

~€65 Billions

Asia

~€45 Billions

I took the time to research, study and analyze other company’s tools in order to build a base knowledge of how they work, what are the main features available, and get an idea of the UX of current products.

Also, I took the time to understand the status quo from competitive landscape to the user experience of the existing process of companies at trade shows.

Research & User Testing

Type | Qualitative research

Methodology | Moderate interview w/ prototypes at the trade shows with 25 companies

User research was conducted on field at trade shows. Being in the environment where this tools will be used was very useful to understand pain points, and see how people were using the products in real time.

This process allowed me to understand well the dynamics happening in a very chaotic environment like trade show where pace is very fast, and customers are always in a hurry. Because these constraints the UX need to be flawless and very intuitive, as well as the UI needs to be clear and easy to understand.

Using an early prototype of our Point of Sale app, we were able to identify three main pain points that people were facing at trade shows:

  1. Slow process – Sales representatives need to be fast on making orders

  2. Lack of flexibility – Orders need to be found easily and also adjusted

  3. Processing orders – Internet connection is not always available

Based on these pain points we were able to find some easy solutions to these issues we identified:

  1. Barcode Scanner – Make sure to have a quick way to add product into an order

  2. Note, Discount, Split Cart features – Make the order easily accessible right away, and being able to modify it within minutes

  3. Off-line mode – Create a sync function, meanwhile store orders locally

Design Explorations, Prototypes & Iterations

By understanding pain points and friction on using our tools we were able to iterate on the design solutions in a better way, instead of relying solely on market research. We implemented some of the features requested, and make the UX as intuitive and fast as possible. All of this was also supported by a clear, clean, and simple UI that made the process of using our tools very easy and intuitive.

Design explorations, building prototypes and iterate allowed me to being able to create the best UX to solve problems for the users. Then, by presenting these prototypes and conducting user interviews, I was able to work out kinks that might have been an obstacle to the smoothest experience and the cleanest user interface.
